The Army of the Earl of Inchiquin
August/September 1647
Munster Regiments are those that were serving in Munster by January 1646, while English Regiments are those raised from disbanded men in England during 1646 and 1647. Most arrived in Munster in the Spring and Summer of 1647.
Foot
Munster Regiments
- Lord Inchiquin's Regiment (Strength 27/08/47 775 men + officers)
- Sir William Fenton’s Regiment (Strength 21/08/47 213 men + officers)
- Sir Percy Smith’s Regiment (Strength 28/08/47 472 men + officers)
- Colonel Thomas Searle’s Regiment (Strength 10/08/47 310 men + officers)
- Col. Perigrine Banastre's Regiment (Strength 21/08/47 275 men + officers)
- Seems to be based on the remains of Sir Hardress Waller’s Regiment of Foot)
- Colonel Francis Courtney’s Regiment (Strength 28/08/47 345 men + officers)
- ex-Col. George Monck's Regiment (Strength 18/08/47 253 men + officers)
- Monck was given command of Col, William Brockett's regiment in April. However he returned to England in May and Brokett resumed command sometime between mid August 1647 and 1649
- Sir Arthur Loftus/Col William Knight's regiment (Strength 14/08/47 462 men + officers)
- Before 09/05/47 “beaten up by the country and broken to pieces” Knight's promotion to full Colonel only seems to have occurred at the end of August
English Regiments
- Major General Robert Sterling’s Regiment of Foot (Strength 28/08/47 457 men + officers)
- Sterling was removed from his command in September for sending copies of an anti-new model army material to Scottish officers in Ulster, but had returned to his command by October 1648
- Colonel Richard Townsend's Regiment (Strength 21/08/47 762 men + officers)
- Col. Charles Blount's Regiment (Strength 21/08/47 436 men + officers)
- Captain John Parsons’ Company of Firelocks (Strength 21/08/47 84 men + officers)
Broghill's Brigade
(These four regiments were intended to form a brigade under Lord Broghill, he never actually assumed the command.)
- Col. Simon Needham/Col. John Jephson's Regiment (Strength 21/08/47 580 men + officers)
- Colonel Henry Grey’s Regiment (Strength 25/09/47 732 men + officers)
- ex-Sir Arthur Loftus's Regiment (new)?
- Colonel Francis Roe’s Regiment (Strength 28/08/47 475 men + officers)
Lisle and Loftus had both departed from Munster after Lisle's commission expired and Lisle's Lt-Col by July. The command of Lisle's was in April and May being held for Col. John Dalbier. Either or both may have ended up under :-
- Colonel William Kingsmill’s Regiment of Foot (Strength 28/08/47 430 men + officers)
- As late as the end of June 1647 Kingsmill appears to have still been Lt Col to Inchiquin's own regiment. As a number of his officers also seem to have come from Inchiquin's, the regiment would appear to be either newly raised or the result of Inchiquin placing some trusted officers over the remains of his opponents' regiments
Horse
Munster Regiments
- Lord Inchiquin’s Regiment of Horse (Strength 13/08/47 368 troopers +72 unmounted)
- Lord Broghill’s Regiment of Horse (Strength 23/08/47 328 troopers +22 unmounted)
- Captain John Aymes’ Troop of Dragoons (Strength 22/08/47 27 men + officers)
English Regiments
- Major-General William Jephson's Regiment (Strength 19/08/47 310 troopers)
- Sir William Bridges’ Regiment of Horse (Strength 16/08/47 283 troopers +4 unmounted)
- Colonel Purbeck Temple’s Regiment of Horse (Strength 23/08/47 230 troopers)
- this seems to include the regiment raised for Lord Lisle
- ex-Colonel Algernon Sydney’s Regiment of Horse (Strength 28/08/47 250 troopers)
- Major-General William Jephson's Dragoons (Strength 19/08/47 108 Dragoons)
Totals
- 7061 foot
- 1569 horse
- 135 dragoons
After allowing for garrison needs and the difficulties of campaigning in winter, Inchiquin's own figures of 1200 horse and near 4000 foot for the Battle of Knocknanuss seem reasonable.
