Conyers Lord Darcy and Conyers was Colonel of Conyers Lord Darcy and Conyers’ Yorkshire Trained Band Regiment of Foot. His eldest son Sir Conyers Darcy, led a blue-coated regiment of foot to join the Oxford Army in 1643 and was severely wounded at First Newbury though he survived. Command passed to his brother, Marmaduke Darcy.

Captains Grant and Henry Darcy apparently led some dragoons in 1642 while raising the Trained Bands of behalf of the Earl of Cumberland.

Blue coats and blue flags with white cinquefoils in 1643²⁾. Equipped with matchlock muskets going by issues.

As with her Traine the Queen lat Southward went, Bravely she had regain’d Burton upon Trent, Of Darcys Blew Coats some the River wade, Whilst that their Collonel had his entrance made, Upon the Bridge their Cannon leapt upon This is the Kings, said he, thence nobly on His men he leads into the very Town, Their Rampiers and their Bulwarks all thrown down, Many of the Defendants there do dye, And Burton taken by their Gallantry.

In pursuance of your order of the seaventh of Aprill, which wee received the 12th of May followinge, wee certifie that Thomas Metcalfe esq., in the beginninge of there warres tooke up armes against the Parliament, and was Captaine over a foote company under Colonell Darcy but came in before Yorke leaguer.

His estate in this County hath bin formerly worth four score poundes paid and lyeth in Louth parte and Keddington. Out of which is paid to the King for a water mill yearely 4 li. 00.00

Im answear to a letter of yours for certifieing the Crymes & estate of Tho: Metcalfe of Bellaryby Esqr, we have endeavoured to informe ourselves therein, the best we can, and doe certify that in the beginning of these troubles hee tooke upon him the Command of a foote companie under Colonell Darcy and continued in the Kings service until September 1643, at which time he gave over that service, and since hath lived quietly at home. And that he hath an estate of inheritance at Bellarby worth in the best times three score poundes p. anno, all which we humbly certifie. He hath not taken either the Covenant or the negative oath here, but afirms he took it at London.

1. That when the Earle of Cumberland did endeavour to raise the Traine Bands of Richmondshire, that the said Mr Dodsworth & his sonne did appeare at Bedall in October 1642 with diverse armed men & did there ioyne with the Lord Loftus & other Gent. of the Country in opposing Captain Henry Darcy and Captain Grant who were sent from the said Earle with two Troops of Dragoones to force up the said Traine Bands.

2. That the said Mr Dodsworth did goe presently after that meeting at Bedall (at the entreaty of the gent) to Hull to Sir John Hotham to procure Armes & Amunition for arming and furnishing the well affected for opposing the Kings party.

'John Bellasyse Sir Robert Dallison and Colonel Darsy were on foote betwixt the workes and the sconce, wherewith some others they in flight fell into a ditch in the Towne graffe, where his lordship steeped in mud, so dirty he was scarce known, ditches have been fatal to Newark Governors, when C. Rossiter routed {Sir Richard} Byron, he lost his periwig in the ditch he fell into, which he went {in} a Cavalier but (seeming a convert) came out a roundhead.

Lieutenant Colonel John Dalton of Hawkeswell was wounded at Burton on Trent 4th July 1643 and died of his lingering wounds 1 year later in York.
