Major General James Lothian’s Company and Regiment of Foot

Parliamentarian foot serving with Brereton’s Cheshire forces

Despite Lothian being Major General in command of the foot of Sir William Brereton’s army in 1645, he appears to have only raised this single company of foot, from Broxton hundred in Cheshire. However in 1646 he was given command of a composite regiment of Foot made up from companies drawn from the various Cheshire regiments, which was sent to besiege Lichfield. His own company was not included in this regiment and was instead sent to block up Holt Castle on the Welsh border.

The Regiment was made up of the following Companies ²⁾

• Capt John Rathbone (ex Brereton's regt)
• Capt Thomas Walley (ex Col. John Leigh's regt)
• Capt Simon Finch (firelocks/dragoons) (ex Brereton's regt)
• Capt Godfrey Gimbert (firelocks/dragoons) (ex Brereton's regt)
• Capt Hugh Birtles ³⁾ (ex Col. John Leigh's regt)
• Capt Edward Glegg (ex Brereton's regt)
• Capt Thomas Monke (ex Brereton's regt)
