Sir Alexander Frazer of Philorth’s Regiment of Foot

A history of the unit is shown in Edward M. Furgol’s A Regimental History of the Covenanting Armies 1639-1651 Edinburgh, 1990. ISBN 0 85976 194 0

In 1639, 1640 and 1644 they were probably not formally regimented, Furgol labels them a ‘retinue’. In 1648 they were firelock-armed and sometimes known as Frazer’s firelocks. Furgol does not identify which Frazer was commanding in 1648 but suggests they may have formed the artillery guard of Hamilton's army.

Equipped with firelock muskets in 1648. As was common for Scots foot regiments, the Colonel's company carried a white flag while other companies carried coloured flags. Captured at Preston, the white flag had a scroll and what might be cockerel feathers but is a ripped fragment only. Flags of the other companies were blue with a white saltire and a central pot of lilies. The inscription was for Couanant Religon Kinge and Kingdomes¹⁾
