Covenanter foot forming part of Leslie’s army in the Second Bishops’ War

• August: Return to Scotland and disbanded after the Treaty of London

• June: Johnstone commissioned colonel for Dunfriesshire and Nithsdale
• August: Having recruited 100 men in Dumfriesshire, the regiment is caught by the English and scattered

It’s uncertain whether Johnstone’s regiment entered England in 1640. Clan Johnstone were famous as one of the border reiver clans.

In 1645 Lord Johnstone was supposed to raise one of the Dumfriesshire Regiments of Foot, but this was probably never raised.

James Johnstone later fought at Kilsyth and Philiphaugh on the Royalist side. He was also later created 1st Earl of Hartfell.
