Colonel Edward Apsley’s Regiment of Foot

Parliamentarian regiment of foot commissioned and disbanded in 1644 without seeing action ¹⁾

• March: Commissioned to be raised in Sussex
• July: Disbanded

Colonel Edward Apsley’s regiments of horse and foot were commissioned in March 1644. Had they been completed they would have come under Sir William Waller’s command as part of the Southern Association. By June the Sussex County Committee complained to Sir William Waller of the expense of maintaining them. In July Waller withdrew his commission, complaining of ‘incivilities’ from the gentlemen of Sussex.

MP for Steyning in the Long Parliament, he commanded a company of the Sussex Trained Bands foot garrisoning Cowdray House, but was captured by a Royalist cavalry patrol in December 1643. In 1644 he attempted to raise regiments of horse and foot but was unsuccessful. He continued as MP for Steyning in the Rump Parliament.

In addition to those officers given by Spring

• Captain Andrew Manwaring (24/03/44 - 13/08/44; Manwaring had been Capt to Col Houghton under Lord Grey of Wark and in Waller's own regt of foot. Waller had presumably sent him to add some experience to the new regt. Spring gives Manwaring as in Waller's regt in December 1644 so he may have returned after Apsley's was disbanded, but his pay claim makes no mention of this. (N.A. SP28/253A)
