The Monmouth Trained Bands of 1638 consisted of 400 men armed with 200 muskets and 200 corslets (body armour, signifying pikemen). They also mustered 47 horse.
In July 1645 a list was drawn up of Trained Band colonels for the hundreds of Monmouthshire (see below). Each of the six hundreds was annotated with 160, probably indicating the number of men but more than likely an aspirational rather than an actual figure.
In 1651 the Monmouthshire militia was ordered to rendezvous at Gloucester to hold the city during the Worcester campaign.

On 28th March 1643, in the aftermath of Lord Herbert's defeat at Highnam, Captain Morgan was ordered to hold Chepstow with his Trained Band company. By 5th April, however, Sir William Waller's Parliamentarian forces had taken both Monmouth and Chepstow. Whether Morgan's Trained Band had evacuated or disbanded in the meantime remains unknown, but the Monmouth garrison had withdrawn to Raglan Castle.

You are to remayne with the Trayne band under your command in the Town of Chepstowe to secure the said Towne and not to permit any of the firearms to goe out of the said Towne. Alsoe of the foure pieces of ordnance which are there you are to dispose two of them for the defence of the Towne of Monmouth and for you doing this shall be your warrant dated at Raglan the 28th Day of March 1643. Attributed to Edward Herbert but signature could be Lord Herbert.
