One of the three regiments of the famous Irish Brigade fighting in Scotland during the campaigns of Montrose
Alexander MacDonnell was brother of Randal MacDonnell, 1st Marquis of Antrim. He remained in Ireland despite his regiment being sent to Scotland but later led the regiment in Ireland, notably at Benburb, until surrender in 1652.
Also spelt Laghtnan, led the regiment in the field in Scotland.
Alexander MacDonnell's foot are re-enacted by Colonel Thomas Laghtnan's Regiment of Foote of the Sealed Knot.
