Royalist regiment of foot raised as part of Herbert’s “mushrump army”
Edward Somerset, Lord Herbert of Raglan (1601?-1667) was eldest son and heir of the Marquis of Worcester. During 1643 he campaigned unsuccessfully against the Parliamentarians of Gloucester. In 1644 he was created Earl of Glamorgan and, again unsuccessfully, negotiated with the Catholic Confederates to bring Irish reinforcements to Britain. He succeeded his father as Marquis of Worcester in 1646 and became an inventor, describing an early prototype of the steam engine.
