Later Sir William Fairfax’s, then Colonel Matthew Alured’s Regiment of Horse
Parliamentarian regiment of horse serving throughout the First Civil War in the Northern Association with the Fairfaxes in Yorkshire
Foulis, William Fairfax and Matthew Alured all commanded troops in Lord Fairfax’s army of the Northern Association in early 1643, as did Alured’s brothers, John and Charles. While seemingly often acting independently, they appear to first have been regimented under Sir Henry Foulis. According to Alured's pay claim (N. A. SP28/34/399) this was a single regiment under Colonels Sir Henry Foulis, Sir William Fairfax, and Matthew Alured in succession. By January 1644 Sir William Fairfax appears as Colonel, but was killed in action at Montgomery in the September and succeeded by Matthew Alured.
Killed at the Battle of Montgomery
In 1659 he took over Colonel Thomas Sheffield’s Regiment of Horse of the New Model Army.
