Notes

A history of the regiment is given in The Regimental History of Cromwell's Army by Sir Charles Firth and Godfrey Davies, Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1940.

Sir Hardress Waller’s New Model Army regiment was formed from his own regiment of foot with the addition of James Holborne’s regiment of Sir William Waller’s Southern Association, originally raised by Sir Arthur Hesilrigge. They fought at Naseby and on Fairfax’s Western campaign, were detached for siege work under Cromwell and served at the siege of Oxford.

In 1648 they were quartered in the West Country, then in 1649 Waller led five companies to Ireland. The remainder of the regiment in England under Clarke was built up to a full regiment and detached six companies to invade Jersey in 1651. Again the companies in England were recruited up to a full regiment, and in 1652, under Clarke, were sent to Ireland, but disbanded in 1655.

Waller’s regiment served in Ireland until the Restoration, when a new (unknown) colonel was appointed , then the regiment was broken up into individual companies, remaining in garrison in Ireland.

Coats, Flags and Equipment

Red coats, as standard for the New Model Army, however, The Gray Coates of Col. Morleyes, and Col. Leytons are put in Col. Pickerings and Col. Wallers Regiments. (E293.23) The Moderate Intelligencer Thursday July 17th-Thursday July 25th 1645.

At the siege of Basing House in October 1645 they are referred to as the black regiment, almost certainly referring to the colour of their flags 2).
