Commonwealth Regiment of horse raised in England and serving in Ireland
A history of the regiment is given in The Regimental History of Cromwell's Army by Sir Charles Firth and Godfrey Davies, Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1940
Henry Cromwell was commissioned to raise his regiment of horse in November 1649. It was based on his own troop from Colonel Thomas Harrison’s Regiment of Horse, two from Colonel John Okey’s Regiment of Dragoons and brought up to strength with new recruits.
The regiment initially served under Lord Broghill’s command in Munster. They remained in Ireland throughout the 1650s. In the tumult of December 1659 Captain Temple captured Carlow and besieged Ludlow in Duncannon Fort.
Henry Cromwell was the fourth son of Oliver Cromwell. Prior to raising his regiment he had served in Harrison’s.
Commanded the regiment while Cromwell was absent in England. Ludlow described him one of the old staunch commonwealth men.
